Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket

Australia batter Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket and will also step away from first-class and List A cricket, while remaining available for Melbourne Stars in the BBL.

Glenn Maxwell had retired from ODIs in June 2025

Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket, also ending his first-class and List A careers while remaining available for Melbourne Stars in the BBL. The 38-year-old had already stepped away from ODIs but has now called time on T20Is as well.

Maxwell finishes with 2,897 runs in 130 T20Is at a strike rate above 154, the third-most T20I runs for Australia, with five centuries — a record he shares with Rohit Sharma. His final international appearance was against Oman in February at the T20 World Cup, from which Australia exited in the group stage. He was a two-time ODI World Cup winner and scored the winning runs in Australia's 2021 T20 World Cup triumph.

Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said discussions about his future had been open-ended and there was no pressure from team management. He admitted a farewell game at the MCG had crossed his mind but said he understood Australia's move towards younger players before the 2028 Olympics. He will now focus on rehabilitation and the BBL, where Melbourne Stars hold him until the end of the 2027-28 season.

Maxwell also played seven Tests, the last in 2017, scoring 339 runs with a best of 104 against India in Ranchi.
